Patricia Edwards

Patricia, age 47, and her husband Clarence were shot to death in their Anamosa home by an escaped convict, Ron Brewer. Brewer was aided by a guard in procuring the rifle and being transported to the Edwards home.
William "Tim" Zimmerman

Captain Zimmerman suffered a fatal heart attack minutes after struggling with an inmate. He and other officers had to forcibly remove the inmate from his cell in order to move him to isolation. He had served the DOC for six years. He was 46 years old.
John Hinz
Prison Cheesemaker

Mr. Hinz, age 36, ran the prison cheesemaking operation. While transporting two of his workers back inside the institution after work, he was attacked with a hammer by the inmates and later died of his injuries.
Charles Strickel

While attempting to remove an inmate from his cell on the upper tier of the cellhouse, Officer Strickel was grabbed and thrown over the railing to his death some 40 feet below. He was 52 years old. He is the first known staff murder victim in the prison's history.
